Google Ads Conversion Tracking: Are You Measuring Real Leads?

Google Ads can show plenty of clicks while the sales team sees very little activity. Sometimes the campaign needs work. Sometimes the measurement is telling the wrong story.

Before changing budgets or keywords, review your Google Ads conversion tracking. Are you recording genuine enquiries, or simply counting people who looked interested for a moment?

Tracking will not make a weak offer stronger. It will, however, help you decide whether your campaigns are generating actions that matter.

First, decide what a real conversion is

A conversion should represent a meaningful customer action, not merely a convenient event to count.

For a lead-generation business, a successful contact-form submission may be a primary conversion. A completed booking or qualified phone enquiry might also matter. A page view or a click on the “Contact” button is a weaker signal: the visitor may never have reached your team.

Make a short list of the actions your business wants. For each one, define exactly when it counts as successful. For a form, that may be an actual success message or a dedicated thank-you page reached only after submission.

Understand primary and secondary conversion actions

Google Ads separates conversion actions used for campaign optimisation from those kept mainly for observation.

A primary conversion can inform bidding when the relevant goal is selected by the campaign. A secondary conversion normally gives you reporting context without telling the system to prioritise that action, although custom-goal configurations can behave differently.

This distinction matters. If you tell a lead campaign to optimise for easy button clicks, it may find people likely to click buttons rather than people ready to enquire.

Review the conversion goals selected for each campaign, not just the list of actions in the account. A correctly configured action will be of limited use if the campaign is optimising towards something else.

Test the customer journey from start to finish

Do not assume tracking works because a tag was installed months ago. Test it.

  1. Open the landing page as a visitor would, including on mobile.
  2. Complete the enquiry form with clearly labelled test details.
  3. Confirm that the form actually reaches the correct inbox or CRM.
  4. Check the website or tag diagnostics for the success event.
  5. Verify that the intended conversion action receives the signal and that it is not triggered by merely opening or clicking the form.

Be aware that platform reporting can take time to update, and consent choices or browser restrictions may affect measurement. A single missing conversion in a dashboard does not prove a technical failure. Use the platform’s diagnostic tools together with a real end-to-end test.

Watch out for duplicated counting

Tracking becomes confusing when several tags or imported events measure the same action as separate primary conversions.

For example, a website might send a Google Ads conversion directly and also import a matching event from Google Analytics 4. That arrangement needs a clear plan; otherwise one enquiry may be represented by more than one conversion action in the figures you review.

Document where each event comes from, which one the campaign uses for bidding and how duplicates are handled. It is worth doing once, properly, rather than debating inconsistent reports every month.

Make sure the landing page earns the click

Good tracking cannot rescue an unsuitable destination. When a person clicks a search ad, the next page should quickly confirm that they have reached the right place.

Check that the headline reflects the keyword and ad promise, the offer is easy to understand, important trust information is visible and the contact route works without frustration. Avoid sending every highly specific advert to a generic homepage when a relevant service page would answer the question better.

A useful campaign review therefore considers three elements together: the search that triggered the ad, the page that received the visitor and the action that was measured.

Track lead quality, not just lead quantity

All form submissions are not equal. If possible, record whether each lead is relevant, contactable and commercially worthwhile.

For an established business, five suitable conversations may be more valuable than fifty enquiries for a service you do not offer. Keep a simple feedback loop between marketing and sales, even if it begins as a shared spreadsheet.

Use that information to improve keywords, negative keywords, ad messaging and landing pages. Where your setup and policies allow it, consider more advanced offline lead-quality measurement once the basics are reliable.

The monthly conversion-tracking check

Before approving the next budget, ask:

  • Are our most important enquiries being measured successfully?
  • Is the campaign optimising for the intended action?
  • Do the conversion numbers broadly agree with the leads received?
  • Are search terms and landing pages bringing suitable prospects?
  • Have we tested the complete enquiry journey after recent website changes?

The point is not to make a dashboard look busy. It is to make decisions with confidence.
